Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka Monday announced that plans are underway to construct a University in Mwingi.
Mr. Musyoka said that land for its construction has already been identified.
He added that Mwingi Professionals had organized an Harambee and raised Kshs.700,000, for the purchase of the proposed university site.
Mr. Musyoka agreed to a proposal by local leaders for the Kshs.1million he had pledged to the constituency that gets most YES votes during the referendum to be added for the purchase of the land.
The Vice President made the remarks at Mwingi North Constituency Development Fund offices, in Mwingi town when he addressed his constituents.
Mr. Musyoka noted that he will work with the professionals in the area on modalities of improving the standards of education in the area.
At the same time, he disclosed that an agreement has been signed between the Chinese and Kenya governments for the construction of Kibwezi - Kitui - Usuweni Road by Syno Hydro Construction Company by the end of the year.
The Vice President said the road will open up and fast track development in the region.
On insecurity, Mr. Musyoka called on the constituents to join in community policing and report any suspicious activities, saying Mwingi was the gateway to Nairobi from Somalia.
He commended the security team in the district and urged them to be more vigilant on activities that could threaten the security of the country.
"Report any suspicious people in the area," he added.
Present were Mwingi Central DC, Mr. Peter Kinuthia, local and religious leaders and other dignitaries.
